  1. America is all of the above. The reason no one else calls themselves Americans is because of the horrible parochialism US Americans have spread throughout the world.

  2. When the explorers first found a new land they named it America after Amerigo Vespucci an Italian Map maker. The used the term loosely for the new world. When each continent was found they distinguished between north South and central. Canada came later. I believe the term America was just a generalization for not Europe. Today’s society has billed Americans as someone from the USA and not the true sense of the word. I think the better question to be asked is what does America truly mean.

  3. The term “America” is not the formally correct name for anything in particular. You’re right: the name comes from Amerigo Vespucci. If I remember correctly some French guy started calling the western hemisphere America, after that Vespucci dude’s name, and it caught on. An alternative name for the western hemisphere is “Columbia,” as in Washington, District of Columbia or the South American country called by the Spanish version of the name “Colombia.” I guess somewhere along the line people started shortening the name United States of America to simply America. Then that caught on. I don’t know why those people didn’t just shorten it to USA. Anyhow, I think when most people these days say “America” what they mean is USA. Of course the case could be different in a few hundred years. It’s funny how language evolves, huh?

  4. Continent.Saying you are American is easier than saying “I am a citizen of the United States of America.

  5. America for me is a continent, I don’t know why some people think that the U.S. is a whole continent. Interesting……….isn’t it? Maybe it is because the U.S. born people didn’t united to call their sefts United Statinans or something like that. So they use the word Americans and then that is why they begin to call the u.s. America? Just a suggestion….
