Based on what criteria, we can choose and rank eligible countries for patent registration?
By Yahoo User • Category: Patents RegistrationFor example, we have an invention in the field of GTL(Gas To Liquid. It is better that in what countries we fill(register) our patent application? Based on what criteria, we can choose and rank eligible countries for patent registration? Very thanks of your attention.
I would suggest patenting your invention in the countries in which you plan to market the eventual product or service. Typically this would include the United States, Japan, and the European Union, as they are the largest markets. However, if you have an invention in a specialized technology that other companies/consumers in other countries might be interested in, patent there as well. An example might be in the petrochemical industry. In this case I would patent in the OPEC nations to be safe.If you don’t have a huge amount of money (say, less than 500,000 United States Dollars), I would patent in the key markets, then license the invention to someone else, preferably a big company. This will shift the hard work to the licensor, while you get a steady stream of ca$h from royalties. Patents aren’t about enabling you to do what you want, they are about blocking other folks from stealing your idea. Defending patents can take a lot of time and money. Getting a big company to help with this is useful.Remember, in the United States the patent goes to ‘first to invent’ while in most other countries the patent goes to ‘first to file’. A patent attorney can help you with this, obviously.
