The reward of a temporary government granted monopoly encourages innovation. If your idea could be stolen, nobody would bother to spend the money to invent things.

Patents are necessary to ensure that no else profits from your original concept, idea, creation, etc. etc. Think about all of the infringment if someone suddenly marketed or used your idea or product without giving your royalties or even without your permission.

So much for the original idea that you need protection from companies that just copy your work without doing any of the development costs.Trouble is now that patents are more like theft in them selves, companies now patent concepts without any development work and dont implement the idea, the patent then prevents anyone else having or developing that idea.patent is theft, stealing ideas from the world

The purpose of a patent is to provide the “inventor” of a product or process with a (usually) 20 year monopoly for that product, this monopoly being the incentive for doing the research that led to the invention. In the pharmaceutical industry for instance, a staggering amount of investment is required to research, develop, trial, and gain marketing approval for drugs. Without patents, competitors would be able to step in and manufacture these drugs without this investment, enabling them to seriously undercut the original developer. In short, without patents, R&D in the pharmaceutical industry would virtually stop. I dont know about you,but I quite fancy the idea of a cure for cancer one day…The above principles are equally applicable to all branches of technology where an incentive is required to be the one to actually invest in R&D.
