Are Patents Good Or Detrimental To The Economy?
By Yahoo User • Category: Do I Need It To Patent? On one hand, patents encourage the researchers and inventor to pursue their project because they know they will have a monopoly of intellectual property to make money. On the other hand, patents discourage “copycats” and competition from improving on the invention. Finally, patents discourage companies from selling goods and products that can’t be protected. Public domain chemicals are not attracting to pharmaceutical companies because they cannot claim a monopoly on it’s sale.Patents restrict research to only profitable, commercial inventions. While it is logical to make money, it would be better for society as a whole to have CURES as opposed to chronic medicines that only control the symptoms but cure nothing. That said, is the patent system good or not ?Please give me your arguments for or against patents.
Patents are good. Since patents are open to one and all–just don’t think about drugs–to create, it encourages and rewards inventors. The guy who came up with and patented the light bulb eventually made some money. Although most of his successive patents weren’t as colossal, it did provide him with funds to continue research. Without those funds, he never would’ve come up with more.If there were no patents, there would be no innovation. There would be no protection from copycats or people to rip off the new inventions. There would be no lucrative deals to sell and market the new inventions and we would never have gotten Flo-Bee or the Pocket Fisherman. Some things should be patented, some things shouldn’t, but that’s all up to the PTO office in Arlington. Nice folks too!
