By Yahoo User • Category: Copyrights in USA

I am releasing my song on vinyl. I own and created the track and have usa copyright. How much legal rights does the record company have once I give them my track to release? Should I get paid upfront or by sales? I know it works by %.What am I titled to legaly in the usa? I would think it would be like 80% and the other 20% for the record company? Not sure how this works

  1. It depends on who the publisher is. The publisher (record company) gets 50% and the songwriter gets the other 50%. Whatever portion you work out with the publishing company is how much you’ll get as the artist of the song. My advice is to pick up “Making Money in the Music Business” by Lee Wilson.

  2. It all depends on the record deal you get.

  3. talk to a lawyer about that, no matter how helpful any of the other suggestions may be or how accurate, your safest bet it to talk to someone who works in this area and knows how to get you the most out of your work. find a lawyer who deals with the music industry and he will be more helpful than anyone on yahoo

  4. If you need the answer to this, I’d sit on the music till you figure it out. If you got the music, why do you need a label?? You don’t.
